Lead Operator
Responsibilities:
-
Knowledgeable in OSHA safety standards. Observe, follow, and implement industry/company safety standards at all times.

General knowledge and understanding of field survey, site, utilities, and building stake out.
-
General knowledge of trenching safety: soil type, shoring, sloping, and egress.
-
Ability to read and understand construction drawings and accurately take field measurements.
-
General knowledge and understanding of tenth measuring system, grade contours, and pipe profiles.
-
Understand accurate use of GPS, pipe laser, rotating laser, auto level, and line transit.
-
Daily use of hand tools: Shovel, digging iron, rake, sludge hammer, levels, string lines, tape measure, story pole, and any other hand tool required.

Daily use of powered tools: Cut-off saw, tamper, floor saw, tapping machine, bevelers, chain saw, pumps, generators, and any other powered tools required.

Communicates with the pipe layer about the alignment and depth of the pipe and structures by using verbal or hand signals to ensure the proper installation.
-
Maintains proper excavation depth utilizing pipe laser, rotating laser, string line, and grade stakes.
-
Effectively communicate tools, materials, and measurements to the pipe laborer.
-
Sets concrete structures: Inlets, manholes, meter pits, and any structure required.

Assist foreman/superintendent with daily schedules and planning.
-
Inspect pipe, fittings, and materials prior to installation.
-
Ensures materials are free of defects and any condition that could impact installation.
-
Assists and performs air testing, column testing, hydrostatic testing, and any required testing.
-
Possess all company required hand tools (tool list) on site for daily use.
-
Maneuver motorized heavy equipment to ensure the accurate removal and placement of materials.
-
Load and unload equipment from vehicles and trailers.
-
Clearly communicate with coworkers regarding job specific tasks and procedures.
-
Report injuries, accidents and near misses to the job foreman/superintendent/general superintendent.
-
Communicate material needs, equipment needs, and repairs to superintendent.
-
Complete tasks as directed by foreman/superintendent/upper management.
-
Demonstrate sharp decision-making skills, particularly when under pressure.
-
Maintain company equipment, materials, and job site to Hershey Excavating standards.
-
Complete required paperwork, reporting, and other daily documentation.
-
Meet goals and deadlines for crews and daily activities as directed by superintendent.
-
Communicate and work closely with the foreman/superintendent.
-
Work directly with general contractors and meet their needs.
-
Maintain accurate time sheets and daily reports.
-
Able to lead a team following Hershey Excavating standards.
-
Understand bulk earthwork and final grading means and methods.
-
Able to do daily as-builts of storm, sanitary, water, roof drains and any other underground utilities that we install.
Qualifications:
-
High school diploma or equivalent.
-
5 – 7 years of successful equipment operating experience is required.
-
A strong understanding of the commercial excavating process is required.
-
The ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential.
-
Possession of a commercial driver's license (CDL) or a willingness to obtain the license (not required).
-
Knowledge of TopCon GPS is preferred but not required.
-
Must possess a strong work ethic.
-
Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
-
Reliable transportation to the jobsite.
